NEW YORK NOSTALGIA.

New York photo diary (Oct 2010)

Reminiscing about a trip to New York last year. Amazing place, amazing people and amazing vintage! The way they do vintage can be quite different to the way it is done in London/Europe. For example a lot of vintage stores are 'Exchange stores', (for example Buffalo exchange) where people come in with piles of clothes in exchange for a few dollars. Kind of like a charity shop although it is run as a business. This means that you can go into a vintage shop and pick up either a 40s dress sitting next to a last seasons Topshop dress (like what happen at Beacon's Closet). The visit was only a few days and we are no way NY vintage experts but here are a few highlights to share.

Anonymous vintage warehouses near Morgan Avenue (Brooklyn): Found a huge vintage warehouse selling mainly vintage Americana for small dollar prices. The place didn't have a name and everyone who worked there spoke Spanish. Cheap and Cheeful.

Williamsburg: an obvious choice for vintage hunting. I loved the mixture of vintage clothes shops, vintage furniture stores and general curiosities. Lots of exchange stores around here - you have to hunt for the good pieces.

East Village: Some amazing small vintage dealers in cute stores around East Village. One of my favourites was  a store called duo which looked like a modern boutique but sold exquisite vintage pieces. They were working on a typewriter (no not a laptop!) to individually craft each swing tag. Another interesting place was Fabulous Fanny's which specialises in vintage eye wear (what a good idea!) but also had some lovely properly antique pieces of clothing. I fell in love with a early 20C white crochet dress but I went away and came back again and had a bit of an argument with the guy as the owner said I could have it for a cheaper price but the sales assistant didn't believe me! grr. Lots of other great vintage boutiques here but I can't remember the names.

Brooklyn Flea: This market is really worth going too. Great variety of vintage at not at all expensive prices. Picked up a 90s flannel red checked dress for $20, and 70s Gant cowboy printed shirt for $7 and a sheer 70s lace dress for $50 (shouldn't have really spent that much but fell in love with it!)

I am sure there are loads more amazing places but these are a few places to put on you list...
